Brightest Watts Outreach

Brightest Watts student with school pupils

Brightest Watts Outreach is an exciting programme run by Heriot-Watt University working with pupils ranging from S1-S6. We work with schools within Edinburgh, Fife, Lothians, Forth Valley and Borders. The programme aims to raise aspirations, raise attainment and provide advice to pupils on routes into higher education. Activities include in-school workshops, campus visits and a subject specific mentoring scheme.

Brightest Watts S1 Programme

Heriot-Watt University is committed to widening access and we are offering a series of workshops in local schools for S1 pupils. The Brightest Watts S1 Programme consists of three workshops and your school can take advantage of one, two or all three of the workshops.

The ‘Wheely Windy Challenge' and ‘Watts Your Language' are two workshops that can be delivered in your school at a time convenient to you. The running time of each of the workshops is 90 minutes. Our third workshop is called ‘Watts University All About', which consists of a half day visit to our Edinburgh Campus. The three workshops can be spread over the year.

If you would like to book any of the workshops or find out more about the Brightest Watts S1 Programme please email us at and one of our friendly team will get back to you.

Brightest Watts Mentors S4-S6

Do you need a current university student to help inspire your pupils and motivate subject choices? Do you need someone with subject expertise to help with after-school or homework clubs? Would you like a university student to support your pupil's exam preparation?

Our Brightest Watts Mentors are current Heriot-Watt University student volunteers who are trained to help out in local schools. They potentially can attend for a one off session or come into your school regularly for a few hours a week.

They can work in the following subjects:

  • Biology
  • Business
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Geography
  • Languages
  • Maths
  • Physics
  • Psychology

The Brightest Watts Mentors are trained to assist in a classroom setting, working with small groups of S4, S5 or S6 pupils who need support, inspiration for subject choices or a role model to encourage them with their studies. The Mentors can assist you with homework clubs or any after school activities that you run.

Request a Brightest Watts Mentor by completing the form below and someone from the team will get back to you.
