Centres and institutes

We drive research for economic and societal benefit through a number of interdisciplinary research centres and institutes. The creation of teams around identified themes including energy, the environment and manufacturing, maximises the potential to achieve positive impact across traditional boundaries.
The Lyell Centre is our most recent research centre, opened in 2016. The purpose-built, £21m facilities enable the British Geological Survey (BGS) and Heriot-Watt to join forces to build on their expertise in land and marine conservation, geology and geoscience, to catalyse and lead integrated and innovative research directions.
