Students offered option of ending on-campus UK accommodation leases

Any students who want to end their lease for University owned student accommodation in Edinburgh or Galashiels are being offered the opportunity to terminate their contract. This applies to students who have already left and those who intend to leave.

For those who need to stay living on campus, we continue to keep our Halls open. Please be reassured the University remains committed to supporting any student who wants or needs to stay in their accommodation on campus at this time.

If you want to terminate your on-campus accommodation lease in Edinburgh or Galashiels, we are introducing an opportunity to end the contract from Monday. There will be a 28-day notice period, which is in line with other University accommodation providers. You must now take the following steps to register your intention to end your lease:

  1. You must email us between Monday 23 March and Tuesday 31 March 2020 informing us of your intention to terminate your lease. Your 28-day notice period will start on the day we receive your email to end your lease.
  2. The email should be sent to halls@hw.ac.uk. The email must include your name, address, H number and your intended departure date. You can remain in the accommodation during your notice period, but you should indicate the date you intend to leave.
  3. Once we receive your email, a member of the accommodation office will provide further advice on the departure processes. You can also find this advice through Residence Life.
  4. Students who have already handed in keys will be assumed to have given notice of termination of their lease on Monday 23 March 2020. If you have departed without returning your keys, let us know using the relevant email address above including if you have left any belongings in your accommodation which you need to reclaim.
  5. You will receive a revised balance statement of your rent after March 31. The University will delay collection of any rental payments for April by direct debit from your account until after March 31 and your new balance has been calculated.

The University is introducing this measure as part of the package of support we are developing to help our students through the extraordinary and exceptional circumstances we are all experiencing. We are continuing to work closely with the Heriot-Watt Student Union as part of our partnership approach to ensuring our students needs are recognised in this challenging period.

For those students who remain in our accommodation, we are happy to discuss extending their lease if they need to stay in Edinburgh for longer.
