Flagship activities

Heriot-Watt University was established in 1821 as the world's first mechanics institute - a place where ordinary people could gain expertise useful for local businesses. The founding ethos of providing accessible learning for people of all backgrounds remains highly relevant in the current political landscape and is integral to our vision of an engaged university for the 21st Century.

We have many ways in which we seek to inspire and understand the mutual needs of our global – local communities. Here we share some of our flagship activities and partnerships where we can inspire, involve and instil a sense of community around our research and our University.
