In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, I sometimes
come across Web sites which I feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention.
Each month I will try to pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short
review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of
interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions I have
decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details
of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the
Nice Web Site Archive.
Time for a bit of blatant promotion. Normally, when choosing the
Nice Web Site(s) of the month I select particularly useful and well-designed
resources, and then briefly review them. This month's Nice Web Site was not
chosen for the usual reasons, but rather because:
a) It features a free competition with some great prizes, and is aimed at
academics.
b) Its a site with which I'm personally involved, and I hope that many of
you will visit it.
- EEVL Challenge
-
http://www.eevl.ac.uk/challenge/
-
The EEVL Challenge is a free competition which is open to all professional
engineers, engineering students, academics and researchers in the UK. There are
some excellent prizes on offer, including two top of the range 3Com Palm Pilots,
a Cassiopeia E100 Colour Palm, £500 worth of Newnes Books, your own Web
site professionally designed (worth £350), EEVL sweatshirts, and 100s of
EEVL posters. It should only take about 5 or 10 minutes to complete the
competition questions. As well as offering great prizes, the EEVL Challenge is
designed to help entrants identify some of the best engineering resources
available on the Internet. That can't be bad!
Several sponsors are helping the EEVL Challenge by contributing the prizes
and distributing promotional material, thus reducing EEVL's overheads and making
the whole exercise possible. The aims of the Challenge are to attract new users
to the EEVL site, let them know about the various services on offer for those
looking for engineering information on the Internet, and forge closer ties with
the commercial and professional sponsors.
Good luck with the competition! If you would like some Challenge fliers to
distribute, please email me: R.A.MacLeod@hw.ac.uk

The Internet in Print
- Webspace
-
Publisher: Forme Digital Media Ltd, Carlton Plaza, 111 Upper Richmond
Rd, Putney, London SW15 2TJ
Frequency: Monthly
Subscription: £40
-
The subtitle of this colourful, relatively new title is "The magazine
for the Internet entrepreneur". Throughout its pages there are plenty
references to ecommerce, 'e-tailing' (a new word, as far as I am aware), and
online transactions, but this is more than just another magazine which focuses
on business aspects of the Internet.
As well as the usual news clips to be found in several similar publications,
Webspace includes articles which I find very thought provoking. For example,
having recently noticed the appearance of
Midlothian On-line, a site which
provides information to the local community, and also
GetLocal.co.uk, I was interested in a
brief item in the September issue of Webspace which emphasised the potential of
the Web to deliver commercial information at a local level. The author of the
article, Graeme Aymer, looked at possibilities of local selling based around
estate agents sites. Another article in the September issue looked at how the
Deckchair site has prospered after a
shaky start, and how it attempts to gather together information from all the
airlines to provide more coordinated access to travel information. The third
article which interested me was the first in a two-part analysis of portals
entitled 'Portal Combat'. A portal "is the place where users start - the
first screen that they receive when they fire up their browser. This is usually
based around a search engine - for example Yahoo! or Excite - and from there
they go on to discover new sites and revisit old favourites, backed up with
content from newspapers and other online information sources". Niche
portals probably have a bright future on the Internet, and so I read with
interest Neil Bennett's case study of what makes a good portal, how much effort
is needed for a portal to succeed, and how quality of content is of great
importance. I look forward to reading part two which will look at how to set up
one's own portal.
Webspace is a very well-balanced magazine - not too technical, not too
orientated to big, or small, business, and not overly focused on the purely
eceonomic aspects of the Internet. As well as the interesting articles
mentioned above, the September issue also featured other items about hiring new
media staff, cyber-crime, the Ipswich Town FC's Web site, and the methodology of
creating an ecommerce site, plus an article by Stuart Dredge on how Web
designers should keep in mind the needs of the partially sighted when creating a
new resource. Other sections covered new products (Web application servers,
image preparation tools, secirity tools, and even software which helps you plan
your online marketing campaigns). A brief directory and a glossary completed
the issue.
Webspace is a good quality magazine, and one which I hope succeeds in a busy
marketplace.
