Interesting news from the EPO: "In the summer of 1998, the European Patent Office, in co-operation with the member states of the European Patent Organisation and the European Commission's DG XIII, will be supplementing its existing channels for the dissemination of patent information by the addition of a new Internet-based patent information service called Distributed Internet Patent Services (DIPS).
The aim of this new service is to provide the general public with an alternative, readily accessible source of patent information, thereby improving awareness of such publicly available information on a national, European, and international level. The service will be specifically targeted at the broad general public rather than at patent professionals, whose needs are already met by a number of existing online services provided by commercial operators. Special emphasis will be placed on providing both individuals and small-to-medium-sized enterprises with a system that will enable them to perform basic retrieval of patent information.
