In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each month we will try to pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity, to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice Web Site Archive.
URL: http://www.wsatkins.co.uk/wsa/home.htm
I come across many company web sites in the course of checking out new resources for this Newsletter, but few of the UK ones are as informative as the WS Atkins site. This large company (7,000 employees) provides various professional, technology-based consultancy and support services, especially in engineering and construction.
This site provides quite a large amount of information about the company, including current projects and financial information. Details are available for some of the company's software products for finite element analysis, hydrodynamic analysis, and linear and non-linear structural assessments. Demos of some software programs are available.
I liked the way that brief information is offered initially, followed by more details, and if appropriate a downloadable brochure, demo, or press release. The site is well structured and the menu and navigational bar makes it easy to find your way around. There is also a Search page and a Contents page, so some though has gone into its production.
