Internet Business News is a monthly newsletter (the August issue was 10 pages long) which gives news about the commercial and corporate side of the Internet. It gives coverage of all allied telecomms/data subjects and services. It is also available through NewsNet, Dialog, Datastar, CompuServe, etc.

The August 1995 issue included items on Auctions On-Line, Bell Cablemedia Plc, Interactive banking, etc, plus sections entitled 'The Bigger Picture' (Canberra to be wired, Secure Internet Mail, etc), 'Net Bits', 'Product Bits', 'Deals', 'In the City', 'Industry Verticals', 'Vertical Bits on the Net', and a 'Diary'.

Most of the items are short and concise. The Newsletter is a good source for busy executives to update themselves on net matters. M2 are expanding their involvement in the Internet, and the Newsletter is just one of their products for businesses.

.tiff

tiff.supercommunications.unlimited, P.O. Box 97011, 149
Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M6R 3B3
Quarterly (or so), $3 (Cover price)
tiff@io.org
ISSN 1198-8460

I don't normally review 'zine' type publications, but the people at .tiff were kind enough to send four issues of their magazine, and besides, any Internet related publication may be of interest to readers of this section.

The .launchpad section of Vol 3 No 2 of .tiff states that "Across the following pages we offer threads of thought in the forms of people, places and machines which are bound together by a critical, yet often forgotten adage: the tool reamins subservient to the braincase that uses it." That really sums up .tiff quite adequately, except to say that in addition it has very much a young Canadian viewpoint.

It contains references to Marshall "The Man" McLuhan", heavy metal rock, Timothy Leary, wire pirates, the Raelians, weirdness, cyberculture, neurotech research, dream stimulators, and such like. Printed in black and white, with lots of graphics, adverts for music, record shops, other 'zines, surveillance equipment, and email messages, .tiff is not exactly an educational resource, but may be of interest to students as an alternative to Wired.

Online Access: Your connection to online services, Bulletin Boards and the Internet.

Chicago Fine Print Inc., 900 N. Franklin, Suite 700, Chicago, IL 60610
Monthly, $41.95 (12 subscriptions)
editor@oamag.com

I found out to my cost that, unlike most periodicals, Online Access has a strict policy against free sample issues, even for review, and I was forced to pay a not inconsiderable sum for an airmail copy of the Vol 10, No 9 September issue. I'm fairly pleased that I did, for Online Access is quite an interesting read. It could best be summed up as a US version of such magazines as Internet and Comms Today and Internet: The essential guide to what's on and where to go. It also has a Web presence, featuring information about online events, links to shareware products, and contents of the printed edition.

Online Access covers various online services, the web, plus BBS services. Included in the 'New Products' section of the September issue were items about GrabNet, a Web browser application for copying text and graphics into other applications; Netscape Navigator Personal Edition; Japan InfoWeb (e-zine); The Difference Is Planning Web page; BookWeb (information about books and over 5,000 US bookstores (http://www.ambook.org/); NlighN for data from over 500 public and private databases (http://www.nlightn.com); the new Motorola Lifestyle 28.8 modem; plus various new books about the Internet.

In the 'Online Update' section was news from the large service providers - America Online, CompuServe, Prodigy, Delphi, The Imagination Network, DEnie, eWorld. There was little of interest to educationists in the 'Online Events' section, or in the 'Clipboard' and a fair proportion of the rest of the contents concerned leisure pursuits and a BBS list. However there were also articles on job seeking online, ISDN, online business information, hints about the creation of Web pages, advice on getting the most out of your Web browser, and reviews of six telecommunications programs (Crosstalk 2.3 with Crossfax, ProComm Plus for Windows 2.1, MicroPhone Pro for Windows 2.0 with Fax Talk, MicroPhone Pro 2.1.1 fand QmodemPro for Windows).

Basically, in Online Access there is almost enough of interest to be worth the outlay.

UnZip: The UKs 1st fully Interactive Magazine on CD ROM

From Zone UK Ltd (8 Peartree St, London, EC1V 3SB) and IPC Magazines
Contact: georgia@vidzone.com
£15.99 (advertised price)

This is a very uptempo interactive CD-ROM magazine which came onto the market a short time ago. It is available from large stores, and installs with ease and runs with only minor hiccups (I do not advise you to click on the 'Newsweek' icon).

_INTERNET RESOURCES_ focuses on resources of interest to Higher Education, and therefore I will not go into detail about the sections in the first issue of UnZip entitled 'The Music Documentary', 'Intersection', 'Alter State', 'Checkpoint', and 'Pleasure Dome', except to say that they kept me entertained for a couple of hours at least. Instead, I will mention the section 'Netropolis', a primer on the Internet. Details of this can be found at:

URL: http://www.vidzone.com/unzip/netropolis.html

Netropolis is accompanied by pulsing music. A section on 'What is the Internet' gives a brief breakdown of the information superhighway, and brief notes about various other aspects of the Internet (WWW, Newsgroups, telnet, etc). Another section explains briefly how it all works, and a third discusses how big it is. At first I thought that was all there was until I clicked on the 'Print' icon, and then it became obvious that there were various other files available, but the only way to read them (that I could find) was to print them - a bit disconcerting when you dont know their size. What actually printed was extracts from the New Scientist (some a little dated). To sum up - some eye-catching graphics, some interesting multimedia effects, but, in this issue, a little short on substance.
