Construction Sector:
Overview

  Insight Into Industry Logo

Scotland is home to a very diverse construction industry; ranging from small local businesses to world famous blue chip companies.

Construction jobs are found throughout Scotland and they represent a crucial part of the overall Scottish workforce. The majority of positions are created geographically across the central belt of Scotland between Glasgow and Edinburgh although jobs are also found throughout Northern Scotland and in rural regions.

Construction jobs cover major infrastructure projects such as: road /bridge building, rail projects and water treatment works, as well as other public sector projects such as social housing, prisons, schools and hospitals. There are also more “mainstream” major commercial construction projects such as office, hotel, retail and new- build housing developments.

Regardless of the economic down turn it would be a mistake, however, to believe that activity will decline across the whole industry in the short term. There are a significant number of major Scottish projects and programmes of work that will continue across the forecast period which are dependant upon the government delivering to its public spending commitments.
